OK today, I have started updating http://dasblog.info for the new 1.9 info and I thougt there would be no better time to try out Windows Live Writer.

(Windows LiveWriter is a free, downloadable beta program from Microsoft that will help you include rich content in your blog posts and know exactly what your blog will look like.)

Well I love Windows Live Writer but today's postings were not as easy as I thougt they would be!

Everybody is raving about Windows Live Writer, and it is great but it does have some pros and cons.

Pros:

  • You can include images without an FTP upload setup. (yawza that beats Blogjet here!)
  • Super easy to setup with dasBlog 1.9 (but not hard with earier versions)
  • There is no easier blog post engine, and I have tried about 20...

Cons: If these are fixed I will be a super WLW fan!!!

  • You can't refresh the category list - (the only thing I was able to do to get a refresh was delete the blog site and reinstall, apparently this only happens if you have a big cat list!)
  • The category list just scrolls on and on down the page, - (I can live with that?)
  • You can't add a new category with a post -(this is very important to me, as I use categories as menu items at http://dasblog.info and almost every item has a new category)
  • You can't delete a post, -

Deleting would not be important, but the system throws an error if you manually delete a post at the blog site and then try to repost the same data again from WLW. You can work around this by cycling to another blog account and back and the WLW post id will clear.

  • You can not include png images??? - (I could not include the new dasblog png badges in a post today!)

Cheers

I spent the better part of the afternoon today trying to get the code for a customer page that would use the generic Google site search to validate to xhtml, not the new adsense, but just plain old search. The code that Google provides is no where near xhtml 1.1 compliant.

Well I finally did customize the code where it works, and validates. I wish somebody had posted this for me!! So here is is for anybody who needs it! The CSS searchbar stuff is not important for function, just layout.

<div id="searchbar">
<h2>Search This Site</h2>
<!-- SiteSearch Google -->
<a href="http://www.google.com/" title="Google"><img width="75" height="32" title ="Google" src="images/Logo_25wht.gif" alt="Google" /></a><br />
<form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search">
 <div><input type="hidden" name="domains" value="http://banjara.us" />
<input type="text" name="q" size="19" maxlength="255" value="" />
 </div>
 <div>
<input type="radio" name="sitesearch" value="" />Web
<input type="radio" name="sitesearch" value="http://banjara.us" checked="checked" />Banjara.us
<input type="hidden" name="ie" value="UTF-8" />
<input type="hidden" name="oe" value="UTF-8" />
 </div>
</form>
</div>

This is a little flash mp3 player, I didn't code it, but I did mod it to add mp3 file tag reading!

It now displays track title and artist/album. Also, the original was designed for inclusion in a full flash page with draging. I modified it to be a stand alone mini player.

Due to www delays sometimes you need to hit the song button a second time to get the tag data! (Iwill look into that problem some day???)

Place from 1 to 12 mp3 files named
track01.mp3 thru track12.mp3 in the same directory!

OK here is the most exhaustive list of geek tools I have ever seen, it's true that if your not a Windows centric developer some will be of little value. I had no idea some of these even existed!

Love this list: RoboSapient approved!

Thanks Scott!

OK, here is an entirely new freeware MP3 player I wrote, (open source helps), it does not have any support files. Just put from 1 to 15 files named "track1.mp3" to "track15.mp3" in the same directory, and call it with the appropriate flash html, (sample file in the download) and away you go!

This sample plays the Wired CD from Nov. 2004 (Rip.Sample.Mash.Share) I particularly like #2 “My Fair Lady” by David Byrne.   Enjoy!

Please note a txt file is not needed!

This is a freeware flash MP3 player that I created (with open source help), in one of my weekends of programming for fun and stress relaxation. It works and you can play it here!

The sample features a few songs my son wrote, sings and produces. I, like my son have not yet figured out where to use our talents, so we are posting them here!
